The Ogun State Police Command has intensified enforcement against vehicles operating with illegal number plates, the misuse of temporary plates, and the unauthorised use of sirens and amber lights across the state.
The command has also commenced intelligence-led checks on vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid or improperly affixed number plates, as well as those unlawfully using car dealers’ plates.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed this to journalists in a statement issued in Abeokuta yesterday. He said the action formed part of efforts to safeguard lives, prevent crime and enhance public safety.
Babaseyi said such vehicles were often exploited to facilitate criminal activities and posed serious risks to public safety. He added that offenders would be identified, arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws to promote road safety.
According to him, specialised units including the Motor Traffic Department, Monitoring Unit and X-Squad have been deployed to ensure professional and lawful enforcement. He said Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers were supervising operations within their jurisdictions to guarantee fairness, transparency and strict adherence to approved guidelines.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Lanre Ogunlowo, urged members of the public to cooperate with officers, comply with traffic and safety regulations and avoid patronising suspicious vehicles.
Ogunlowo advised residents to use only recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points, assuring them that the enforcement drive was aimed at preventing crime, maintaining public order and protecting lives. He also appealed to residents to report suspicious activities or security concerns through the command’s emergency lines.
