Two Dead In Lagos Midnight Auto Crashes

Two separate auto crashes occurred in Lagos in the early hours of Monday, claiming two lives and leaving two others injured.

According to witnesses, both accidents happened around midnight when the vehicles involved reportedly lost control and crashed, resulting in the fatalities and injuries.

The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, while emergency responders recovered the bodies of the deceased.

The incidents underscore the need for greater caution on Lagos roads, particularly at night, and serve as a reminder for motorists to adhere to traffic safety guidelines.

Confirming the two accidents, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) noted that the first occurred along Otedola Bridge, inward Berger bus stop.

According to LASTMA, the second crash happened on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward the UNILAG waterfront.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said both fatalities were recorded in the Otedola Bridge accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

He said preliminary investigations showed that an unregistered vehicle with two occupants, including the driver, was travelling at high speed when it rammed into a moving, heavily-laden trailer at about 2:30 a.m.

Bakare-Oki said the impact was fatal, leading to the instant death of both occupants.

“In a disturbing twist, the operator of the involved trailer fled the scene with the articulated vehicle.

“LASTMA’s 24-hour Night-Gang Teams, strategically deployed within the Otedola corridor for midnight surveillance and proactive traffic control, responded swiftly.

“The deceased victims were respectfully evacuated from the main carriageway to prevent secondary incidents, after which the mangled vehicle was carefully removed from the expressway.

“Officers of the Isheri Police Division provided additional security support, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) carried out the formal evacuation of the remains in line with emergency and public-health protocols.

“The victims received prompt first-aid from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

“Despite the distressing nature of both incidents, LASTMA officers maintained vigilance and continued to manage traffic along the two corridors to ensure the safety of motorists and prevent additional hazards,” he added.

Meanwhile, the LASTMA General Manager extended condolences to the bereaved families and lamented the tragic loss of life caused by reckless speeding and disregard for road safety regulations.

He reiterated the agency’s strict insistence on compliance with prescribed speed limits, stressing that adherence is essential to safeguarding lives and preventing avoidable tragedies.
