The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man over the alleged gang-rape of a 19-year-old woman in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learnt on Thursday that the incident occurred on Sunday when the victim had gone to collect a key from someone in the area.
Narrating how the incident occurred in a video interview obtained by PUNCH Metro, the victim, whose identity is withheld, said she was allegedly dragged inside a building by two men.
She said, “On Sunday, I went to collect a key at a place. When I got there, I collected the key from the person. As I was leaving, two guys, Bolu and Ayo, dragged me inside and gang-raped me. I only know one of them whom I often greet but I don’t know the second guy.”
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, said following the report, police operatives issued the victim a medical examination form and accompanied her to a hospital for examination.
He stated, “Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command attached to the Ijebu-Igbo Division have arrested a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 19-year-old female victim in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, while an intensive manhunt has been launched to track down his fleeing accomplice.
“The arrest follows a formal report lodged at the station on Tuesday, 1st September 2026, at about 10:10 a.m., by the victim’s mother regarding an incident that occurred on 30th August 2026 at their residence in Odo Idi Scale, Oke Sopen, Ijebu-Igbo.
“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives immediately swung into action, visiting and securing the scene of the crime to gather crucial evidentiary material. In line with standard procedures and survivor-centred care, investigating officers promptly escorted the victim to the General Hospital, supported by a formal Police Medical Form, for comprehensive medical examination and care.”
Oluborode said police operatives subsequently tracked and arrested one of the suspects, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend his alleged accomplice.
He said, “Following preliminary inquiries, operatives successfully tracked down and arrested one suspect, identified as Ayomide Kamula, aged 20.
“The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing interrogation while robust operational measures and intelligence-led searches have been intensified to track down and apprehend the fleeing co-suspect, identified as Boye Balogun, ‘m’, who remains at large.”
He noted that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said the command would not tolerate any act of sexual and gender-based violence.
“The CP reiterated the Command’s firm commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against sexual offences across the state.
