The Lagos Polo Club, one of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious polo institutions, has announced the indefinite ban of real estate mogul Sir Olu Okeowo from entering its premises following an assault incident involving one of his security aides.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, and signed by Mr. Adeyemi Oreagba, the Honourable Secretary of the club, Okeowo’s security personnel allegedly attacked a member of staff during the Reminisce Event held at the club’s grounds in Ikoyi, Lagos, last Saturday.
“During the Reminisce Event held at the Club on Saturday, 18th October 2025, a member of our staff while performing his duty was assaulted by the security personnel of a guest,” the memo stated.
According to Oreagba, the matter was immediately brought before the Club’s Main Committee, which investigated and confirmed the incident after speaking with the parties involved and eyewitnesses.
“In view of this, the Committee has resolved to ban the guest, Chief Olu Okeowo, from entry into the club premises, either as a guest or otherwise until further notice,” the statement continued.
The club’s management reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for any form of assault or misconduct against staff, stressing that the welfare and dignity of employees are paramount.
“The Club places great importance on the welfare and dignity of all Club staff, who are duly empowered to enforce Club policies. We will have zero tolerance on any form of assault by members and guests against any staff of the club,” Oreagba emphasized.
He also reminded members that they are fully responsible for the actions of their guests, domestic staff, and security personnel while within the club premises.
“Members are reminded that the conduct and actions of their guests, security personnel, domestic staff, and associates within the Club premises remain their responsibility,” the memo read.
Sir Olu Okeowo, the billionaire founder and chairman of Gibraltar Construction Group, is a well-known Lagos socialite and real estate investor, often referred to as the “King of Luxury Estates.” His suspension from the Lagos Polo Club marks a rare disciplinary action against a prominent member of the elite Lagos social circuit.
The Lagos Polo Club, founded in 1904, is known for its exclusive membership and strict adherence to decorum, making the sanction a strong statement about its stance on discipline, equality, and respect within its community.
