Nigeria @64: Celebrating Resilience And Democracy

By Òtunba Olaide Emiola Oshifeso-Pressy Àgbà

As Nigeria marks its 64th independence anniversary on October 1st, 2024, we reflect on our nation’s remarkable journey. From the struggles of our founding fathers to the present day, Nigeria has demonstrated resilience and determination.

Andrei Gromyko, former President of the USSR, once said, “Before you leave the airport of your country, the government of the African country you had intended to visit would have been overthrown.” This highlights the historical external interference that has shaped Africa’s destiny. Visionary leaders like Muhammed Ben Barka, Ahmed Ben Bella, Patrice Lumumba, Oginga Odinga, and Nigeria’s own Chief Obafemi Awolowo were hindered from realizing their potential.

Despite initial setbacks, Nigeria has made significant strides in democracy. We’ve transitioned from military rule to stable civilian governments, with the most recent presidential election marking a significant milestone. Our constitution ensures freedom of religion, and we’re home to diverse cultures and languages.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th anniversary, we honor the visions of our past leaders, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe. Their legacies continue to inspire us toward a brighter future.

Let us unite in our quest for progressive leadership, noble governance, and diligent citizenship. May God guide us toward a future where our country thrives, and our democracy endures.
