My path and Chief Olatunji Abudu’s crossed in 2019, less than a year into my tenure as Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta. As a fellow and friend of the polytechnic, Chief Abudu was a respected figure. We decided to pay him a courtesy visit, simply to check on him and wish him well. But what transpired was more than just a pleasant encounter.
As we were about to leave, Chief Abudu called us back, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Rector, what can I do to further assist Moshood Abiola Polytechnic?” he asked, his voice filled with genuine interest. We exchanged glances, thinking about what to say. In hushed tones, we whispered among ourselves, “MAPOLY Radio.”
I took a deep breath and explained the story behind our Mass Communications program’s stalled dream – an approved radio station struggling to take off due to infrastructure needs.
Chief Abudu’s response was immediate. Without hesitation, he pledged N10 million to support the project, and his pledge was later redeemed. That’s the true story behind the establishment of MAPOLY Radio – a testament to Chief Abudu’s kindness, generosity, and commitment to education. May God continue to strengthen his family.
