Celebrating Ijebu Heritage: Bringing Forth The Rich Legacy of The Jebusites

By Òtunba Olaide Emiola Oshifeso

Rooted in tradition with biblical reference, my father’s words, Chief Gabriel Adédéjì Òṣífęsò (aka “Doctor of Wood”), remain etched in my memory. He instilled in me a profound pride in our Ìjębú heritage, emphasizing our people’s exceptional qualities:

Our Ijebu heritage is characterized by:

I. Exceptional work ethic
II. Unwavering intelligence
III. Unshakeable resilience

The Bible underscores our ancient existence in Numbers 13:29:

“The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south, and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains.”

This verse affirms the Ijebus as a storied people, renowned for:

1. Industrious nature
2. Strategic settlement on mountaintops (symbolizing ascension to greatness)
3. Philosophy that success demands hard work and divine grace

My father’s words still echo in my heart:
“Láí, (as he fondly calls me), as an Ìjębú man, you’re destined for greatness, but it won’t come easily. You must earn it.”

His guidance remains my north star:
“It’s not enough to know your greatness; you must know how to claim it.”

Today, I proudly proclaim my Ijebu identity, honoring our ancestors’ legacy.

The Ijebu people possess:
1. Hardworking spirit
2. Intelligent minds
3. Resourceful nature
4. Resilient hearts
5. Visionary thinking
6. Industrious drive

Let us:
I. Embrace our heritage
II. Strive for excellence
III. Ascend to greatness

“Ibi giga l’aye wa” – We are of greatness.

“Mi o le wa ku kan, kii j’oye Ile baba ę” – A person that doesn’t want to die will not be able to inherit his father’s title.
