The road linking Lagos and Abeokuta on the federal road at Itori in Ewekoro Local Government of Ogun State has turned to a serious threat to the lives of motorists and commuters as portion of the highway has been damaged.
The road has also been endangering the life and property of residents and traders in the area as the water channel from the highway diverted into the major streets to disrupt trading activities and poses threat to residents in the area.
Gateway times gathered that residents in the area had been protecting the road from collapsing beyond point of amendment for over four years as they filled the bad portion with stones and sands after rainfalls.
Our correspondent also reported that the residents always troop to the highway flag down motorists, redirect them to safer routes whenever there is heavy rainfall.
However some federal and state government vehicles apparently on their way to Lagos were sighted passing through the bad portion of the road despite its condition.
An indigene of the community, Bakare Fatima in a phone conversation told gateway times that the Itori road being the only route that leads directly from Abeokuta to Lagos is the worst road they have ever seen.
“The bad road is seriously posing threat to our lives in this community because the water channel from the highway is diverting to our homes.
“I don’t know why the government that constructed a road cannot build gutters for it, since there is no gutter for the water to pass through, the road will continue to be in bad shape”.
Similarly, a trader who identified herself as Iya Ibadan claimed, the road is the major factor why the community recorded high rate of death as accident had claimed the lives of many individuals in the community.
She added that, the victims include residents, passerby, traders, and commuters among others.
“This road is our major problem in this community. That is the major reason why this community recorded high rate of death among other communities in Ogun State.
